Longevity Habits: The Daily Routines That Slow Aging

No capsule beats the basics. The daily habits below — how you move, sleep, eat and recover — carry the strongest longevity evidence we have, usually for free. Here's every lifestyle guide on the site, and what the science says to prioritise.

If a supplement matched the mortality data behind cardiorespiratory fitness or good sleep, it would be the most famous pill on earth. It doesn't exist. The interventions with the largest, most consistent effects on how long and how well you live are behavioural: raising your VO₂ max, protecting muscle with protein and resistance training, sleeping enough, and giving your cardiovascular system regular stress through exercise or heat. These are not glamorous, and that is precisely why they are underrated — there is nothing to sell.

The habits fall into a few buckets. Movement and fitness is where the biggest numbers are: your VO₂ max predicts lifespan better than almost any single blood marker, and a mix of easy Zone 2 cardio and hard intervals is how you raise it. Protein and resistance training defend the muscle you otherwise lose from your forties on. Sleep is the recovery system all of this runs on — chronically short nights undo a lot of the rest — and heat exposure through regular sauna use tracks with striking drops in cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Eating patterns like intermittent fasting matter too, though, as our guide shows, mostly through the calories they cut rather than any magic in the clock.

Each guide here translates the research into something you can act on this week, and every claim is cited to peer-reviewed studies under our editorial policy. Habits and supplements aren't rivals — the smartest approach is to get the free, high-impact basics right first, then consider whether any longevity supplement adds something at the margin. Start with whichever of the areas below you're neglecting most.
