The brain ages on its own schedule, and much of what protects it is unglamorous. These guides cover what the research measures and what it does not.
Cognitive aging is the part of longevity people worry about most and the part with the fewest shortcuts. There is no supplement with convincing randomised evidence that it preserves human cognition over the long run. What the research does describe well is the machinery: how the brain clears waste, which genes shift the odds, and what changes in midlife.
The glymphatic system is the clearest example. During deep sleep, fluid moves through brain tissue and flushes out metabolic waste including amyloid fragments, which is one reason sleep quality keeps appearing in dementia research rather than at the edges of it. The APOE gene explains part of why risk differs so widely between people, without determining any individual outcome. Newer work on midlife immune cell turnover in brain tissue adds another layer to the timeline.
The supplement side is covered honestly: creatine has small, real cognitive trial data, mostly under sleep deprivation or in vegetarians, and methylene blue is a genuinely interesting molecule whose popular use has run far ahead of its evidence. Each guide below cites its sources and follows our editorial policy. None of this is medical advice, and anything involving cognition belongs in a conversation with a clinician.
